Herbert has enclosed some verses for Markham to look at. He was ill and missed the reception for Virgil given by (Coggin's?). He finshed writing a serial story of love. He heard about Bailey Millard's Wife's death. He wishes Markham was with him in Calif. The letter is addressed to Dear Poet. He also enclosed a copy of his poem Ysemite Which appeared in th e San Francisco Chronicle Shrine.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
